Well, against my better judgement, I found myself on a longwinded track to imagination land 8D Thus... this topic.

What would work for old-school/newschool styled Sonic, both 2D AND 3D, post Needlemouse?

Discuss! Here are my thoughts. I'll start with the simple and obvious first, and go on to the er.. riskier ones D: :

* Ideally for this upcoming game, minimal plot at the very most. Sequences with Dr Robotnik causing ruckus, but that's about it.

* Jun Senoue(sp?) as musician. A classic artist for a classic series.

* Smooth, flowing graphics, but simplistic and without 'fur' or fibres. Like Mario is today.

* Beautiful rendered and colourful worlds a la above, but nothing -too- realistic.

* Animal-styled badniks- which they've started on again, so kudos!

* Loop-de-loops, springboards and platforms are a MUST. So are elemental
bubbles and traversing the underwater.

* Original jump noise, and the 16-bit SFX to add to familiarity.

*Original 'stage clear' music. Or, have a mix of the two for different acts, perhaps!

*Emerald hunting!

* Varied music for different acts!

* No voice-work if possible, and keep dialogue to a minimum. Let the actions tell the story.

*The VS style mode from Sonic 2- with online play if possible. With VS-mode style music to boot!

* For when two people want to play as the same character in VS, have what happened in Sonic the Fighters. Robotnik turns up and zaps them with a weird beam, and they split into two counterparts. A weird sequence but hey- for a two-player fun mini-game, it's not meant to make complete sense so just roll with it! After all, it's just a silly way of explaining how they're different colours (like in Streets of Rage 2, where you can be fighting against yourself in a different colour, lol)

* Different routes to be available to only either: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles. Like how Knuckles alone could take a certain path- this time, Tails can take paths only available to a swimmer, for instance. (One that a- Knuckles cannot climb up and b- Sonic cannot jump up to. Neither of them can swim.).

* Nack the Weasel as a weasly sidekick to Robotnik. A little bit like Snively is in the SatAM series.

* Introduce Knuckles as the 'duped sidekick' of Nack. Idea:
In Knuckles' POV, you see that Nack, in cahoots with Robotnik, forms an 'alliance' with Knuckles (Robotnik's then ally) under a pretense, and the pair will appear randomly to try and thwart Sonic/Tails' attempts at getting through the level (a la Sonic 3 and Knuckles). Fast forward to a Hidden Palace Zone type sequence where Knuckles learned Robotnik has betrayed him, Nack will be the one to betray both Knuckles AND Robotnik, stealing the Master Emerald for himself! You will face him as the second-to-final boss. After you're done with him, Robotnik will have sneaked the Master Emerald out from under his nose and you will finally have to face him. Finish it, and plane-ride Knuckles down to the Floating Island to restore the Master Emerald. Simple, really!

* Special stages, nicely hidden away just like their S3&K counterparts. A big spinning ring is paramount here.

* Special stages: remember how the running-down-a-building is such a thrilling visual? How about have this for the more advanced stages for a real feel of 'no going back' like in Sonic 2 counterparts, and the way you're constantly falling in Sonic Advance.
For others, how about an avalanche-type slide, speeding along on a snowboard, using ramps in certain sides of the slide to boost along paths. Choose which one best avoids the bombs, or gets the best catch of rings! Quick-thinking reaction time required here.

*For the 3D, have colourful hub worlds in Mobius, and rare cameos of some newer characters, like when Cream flies around in Sonic Adventure DX, or when you saw Big the Cat stuck somewhere lol. This time, have maybe a shop/small agency in the background in one of the worlds, run by Vector, with an annoyed Espio working as a fetcher and carrier. It doesn't have to have any significance, but they can simply be there for the purpose of making the world look more Mobian!

Chao:
*If there is an element more complex, let it be the Chao with an updated A-Life engine. Raising Chao and racing to earn unlockables, maybe?

* Chao can be as a side-game (a la Sonic Advance), only with more playability features than Advance instead of just Ring-grinding and two 'ok' minigames. Interact more with the Chao, have the Chao Doctor etc.

* As an optional extra, pay with Rings for Chao School/Item that ups the 'nature' of a Chao's ability, instead of having to breed them excessively for said abilities. Natural abilities will still vary, however none of them will ever be 'exceptional', leaving you the choice of grinding to upgrade the all-round decently abled ones to super special awesome. Haha..

* Have a stasis field for the Racing Chao (a la the externally held Chao that you kept in your VMU/Gameboy Advance), in order to preserve their life-force for as long as you're racing with them. (Then again the other Chao gardens work pretty well for this, the ones you spend less time in).

* Lifespan depends on how well a Chao is treated in it's life. If it's treated very badly, it dies, and early. If it's treated very well, it will reincarnate, but be blessed with a much longer life before it does.

* Chao will interact with each other. The ones who have raced together may bicker, so keep them apart! Some who are left alone will sob, so bring them to the company of others!

* Overfeeding Chao to gain stamina will not be an option now! :P Stamina can be built by accquiring special, much smaller and concentrated foods (not tablets, that may be a little dubious lol)

* If no Chao games at all, at the very least have them as a recurring cameo like in Superstars Tennis. For people who miss the Chao, and the people who don't bother with them don't have to.

I want to see someone other than the usual Sega teams do a Sonic game. Kind of like how Kojima Productions is working on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, or how Team Ninja is doing Metroid Other M. Getting some fresh blood involved might be just what the series needs.

Besides, it's not like they could do much worse than Sonic '06 or Sonic Labyrinth...

That's a very good point, like Dimps did the whole Advance series (to the best of my knowledge), maybe if they got a shoe-in the project again? They did a decent job at least of Advance (not played the next two... so don't really know), so they can't go far wrong.

Or if said folk collaborated with at least -one- of the original designers from the 1991-4 era, working from original 'blueprints' as a guide, we would start to see some real changes.

I Love it! But I also think the characters should be at a Minimum,

If Tails is in it. Good.
If Knuckles is in it: Great
If Amy is in it: Tolerable
If Blaze is in it: Good.
If Metal Sonic is in it: Ok.
Like Jacks Said, if Fang is in in: Good. (I miss that Purple Weasel)

I Dont think characters such as Shadow, Cream, Rouge and even though I like him, Silver, should be in the game.

Also I personally think None of the Characters Except for Sonic should be Playable, I only want to play as Sonic (and the exception of Super Sonic). Why not make Super Sonic playable again like in Sonic 3 & Knuckles? and we can have more Emeralds, Also maybe the Sacred swords, and the World Rings can make an appearance.

Also maybe the Chao Idea can work. Maybe u can give a Chao a Fruit looking like a Sonic Character to make it a Character Chao. Maybe Chao will cry if their Abused, or if u take their food away like in SA2. Chao may also run up to ur leg and cuddle you also in SA2.

Also Chili dogs will make an Appearance! When u eat a Chilidog, you get more Exp. I wish the gamplay would be similar to the Daytime stages in Sonic Unleashed.

For Exp. U can level up your Speed, Ring Boost, Homing attack range and Power, and Element Ability (Element Ability is when u recieve a certain ring, Flame ring, Ice ring, Electric Ring etc... however it is optional)

Also theirs certain items from past sonic games u can find, for example an Extreme gear and u can choose to ride it if u want to, and Caliburn which allows u to make possible attacks while running, the Bounce Bracelet, those shoes in Unleashed that allows u to boost in Midair, the Ancient Light, the Light speed shoe, and more!

One last thing are Sonics Abilitys, He can do the Homing Attack which is when he locks on to an Enemy, zooms towards the enemy and uppercuts off of the enemy (Robot in Particular) he can also Grind and maybe Grab and hang from ledges. He can also Somersalt, He can use the Boost Incorperated from the Sonic Rush Series, the Spindash, and finnally he can Wall Jump

Aah, Speculative Sonic; because bitching can only go so far. Here's what I want to see:

* A complete continuity reboot, with the vast swathes of apparently useless characters and plotlines removed in favour of the only two who really matter; Sonic and Robotnik. As such, the ARK incident, Chaos, Shadow... All the gumph that the series has accumulated over the years is erased. A reboot may not be popular, but to my mind there are too many characters who either have no reason to exist, or just seem to clutter things up. Note that this doesn't remove the possibility of intelligently adding certain characters such as Tails and Knuckles at a later date for a specific reason.

*Robotnik's Western name restored. I don't care if Eggman is his original Japanese name; it's bloody terrible.

* Have a basic story which, while not earth-shattering or particularly deep, does hold together under scrutiny.

*Proper Special Stages again.

*Make the Chaos Emerals a secondary thing once again, making it possible to beat the game without them, but a better ending available if you put in the effort to get them.

* More focus on getting the ratio between speed and platforming in the levels right, like it was in the old games, as opposed to the literal "hold right to win" tripe we have now.

* Bottomless pits should be an obstacle, not a continuous threat as they are now. The older games hardly had any of them. If you fall off the main route, it should be possible to take another when you hit the ground.

* Bring back underwater exploration, complete with that heart attack-inducing timer when your oxygen's low.

*Robotnik has a more evil feel to it. (Eggman sounds funny though)

* There are too many useless Sonic Characters that should be removed.
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman are all we need. (My friends said that Knuckles was the S%#t, back in the day)

* Better Special Stages.

* Beating the game without having to use the Chaos emeralds.
Since Sonic Adventure 1, it was mandatory for Sonic to go Super Saiyan to fight some big a$$ final boss. (who's not Eggman)

Are you all forgetting Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts? They need to return as kind of like Miniboss Characters or something. I just want them to be in a game other than Mean Bean Machine (even though I actually LIKE mean bean machine (If you hate mean bean machine, then you can flame me at kintobor4life@sbcmobius.net)). I dont mind most of the newer games (again flame me if you want. i dont care), but I just want a good old sonic game like the old days with the catchy 16-bit music. And I wanna play as cool anti-hero Knuckles. Not the emerald happy knuckles.

And I vote yes for Metal Sonic's Return

Oh, there's one I forgot to mention:

Give the franchise to another developer. To my mind, Sonic Team just can't be trusted with the franchise anymore; they've ballsed up both the 2D and 3D gameplay beyond belief (this is why I don't understand the hoo-ha about Needlemouse being in 2D). Let someone else have a go; we might still get a bad game, but let's face it, we could only have figured that out through practice.

As I've talked about with Jake, what would be cool is to see some character development. They had inklings of it in SA1 & 2, but since then the only "character development" was their "Shadow is mysterious" act. It'd be nice to see Sonic as more than a guy who runs fast spouting catch phrases and advertising some new brand of shoe. Maybe I'm just being nit-picky.

Or as Jake mentioned, seeing the characters aging. Seeing them grow and learn from past experiences, and develop beyond the repetitive roles they play in every game. Seeing Tails be more than a little kid, Sonic and Knuckles being a tad bit wiser, Amy being... less whiney, whatever. It would also work well with the character development idea. What's it matter? The Sonic franchise has had so many discontinued story lines already, what's one more discontinuity?

It would be nice to see the characters age a bit.

I think the franchise should go to another devoloper like Nintendo or Team Ninja.

Improve the characters, Rouge would be better with her original voice actor and Sonic Heroes costume Because she'll look and sound more like an 18 year old G.U.N agent (rather than some 40 year old hoe).

Knuckles should be wiser and Sonic should be a bit more serious (and he should have a backstory).

I agree with BlackDogBrew here. I also stand by his statement about the new developer. It's not like Sega have a clue how to still make 2D games - just look at Sonic Rush.

I like the idea of this. In that sense, 'episodic' games wouldn't be too bad. It heavily relies on them doing it right, however. Reboot the series and keep one continuity, in which the characters show some- even if slight- tones of difference when developing, yet still keep the simple tone of the game itself.

It -will- be repetitive, that's just one thing we all have to accept, however it will have certain differences from game to game- they won't all be carbon copies of each other. How about Robotnik terrorises different areas of the planet every game? One time it's Angel Island, another it's Mobius itself, and then the same but different kind of zones. Or have the zones develop over time, for example if it was Angel Island Zone, what would happen after it was burned to a crisp since S3&K? Would it have quaked and had masses of rock form, and new springs/grass? That sort of thing.

As for backstory, I'd like one of those prologues like in Ristar. It was short, and straight to the point. That's all that it needed really. Sonic mostly needed the odd SILENT cutscene, for example when he ran into Knuckles. That's the sort of thing that should qualify as a cut-scene in the Sonic verse.
